Huge Destash

Finally it's here! I've been trying to do a destash for over a year now, and finally I got around to set it up..

How things work:

The destash consists of packages. Each package is $30 total ($22.50 package plus $7.50 for small flat rate box shipping).
If you get more than one package, and I manage to package everything in just one box, I will refund you the extra shipping.
If you are not located in the US, I will have to weigh the package you purchased and I will let you know the difference in price for international shipping. Fortunately polymer clay, baked, is not very heavy. Only if the package has canes it might be a bit heavier. Usually the cost is $13.50 for 1/2 lb, $22.75 from 1/2 lb to 2 lb, $34.75 from 2 to 3 lbs. So you'll have to pay extra the difference between the international postage and the $7.50 for US postage. I will mention for each package what is the weight so you can make your calculations.

The destash packages will be first listed here, with the destash video embedded.
What doesn't sell from here until Sunday Oct 13 in the morning, will be moved on my website.
At this moment there are 26 destash packages.

I will complete this post tomorrow October 10 with all the purchase buttons.
Sale will start at 9 am Central Daylight Time. I will try to update what is sold from time to time during the day; you won't be able to buy a package that's already been sold, it's just to avoid extra clicks for you.

All purchases made before 9 pm will be mailed the next business day. I can't go to the Post Office so I need to schedule pick up

At this time, all the packages that have not been sold will be moved to my Kalyana Design store in a couple of days (right now that section of the store is not updated and only shows old destashes that have already been sold).

What's on my list of buys you ask?

Well, from my "monthly chats with you", you already know that my "must" to buy that are planned and budgeted, and very important, are, in order: a bigger monitor, an ergonomic chair, and new eyeglasses.
1. The bigger monitor - well, it will be actually a TV. For the size I need, a TV that size is less than half the price of an actual monitor. As long as the TV has HDMI input, good resolution and all that, it will work just fine. With a bigger monitor, I'll be able to see better what the heck I'm doing. And see when I get off-camera, lol
2. An ergonomic chair. They make "gaming chairs" now! That is for people that sit immobile (well, moving your mouse and typing on the keyboard doesn't count as much mobility) for long long hours. With an ergonomic chair I will be able to sit on a chair longer than one hour, not just for the lives, but I'll also be able to not have to go lay down every 15 minutes when I am working on something.
3. New eyeglasses. I actually need progressive ones, that will finally make it possible that I don't have to go "glasses on/glasses off) all the time.

But what about other things? what other things are "musts"
Well, there aren't many. Just a few.

One would be another organizer. If you haven't checked my Amazon influencer store, there's a whole section there with organizers. I have a pretty nifty one, all metal - that takes away the worry of it being affected by the clay. Why do I need so many organizers on my table? Because it can be painful to keep getting up and getting stuff from the shelves/drawers.
I already have one similar to what I will show you below, that I got at BigLots for $8. This one is $10, but it's a tad bigger. I love the fact that it has both upright holders AND little drawers.

Metal organizer

Then some more sterilite stackable drawers. With those I have no qualms, I'll just look around at Goodwill. Last time I went there I found 2 of them, the kind that are over $10 in the store, for just $2.99 a piece.

Some tiered spice jar holders. That will also be Goodwill. I have this tiered carousel rack for spices, that's been on my counter for ages. I was looking at it one day and went "hmm... I almost never use the spices from it, I use the spices from the cabinet, it's there just because it matches the cabinets. I wonder..." So out the old spices went, jars were cleaned, lids were labeled, then were filled with all kinds of mica powders I had laying around in various plasticky containers and little bags. Ta-daa! huge space saver. Need to do that for more of the mica powders and also for the acrylic paints that I use very often.

I'm talking about stuff like this one

They're expensive as heck when brand new. But I've seen them plenty at Goodwill and other thrift stores.

So yes, as you can see, it's pretty much organizing. One day I'll show you my work room. And explain why I have it set this way - the whole idea is to minimize painful moving around to get what I need, and also decluttering and saving space.

New website layout but no Clay with me on Feb 4th

I intended originally to do just a mild upgrade to my website and leave a major overhaul for summer.
Unfortunately, when attempting (repeatedly) to do the simple upgrade, I was unsuccessful due to the fact that the main frame was too old and not supporting the new extensions I wanted to install.
So I had to go to the extreme overhaul that wasn't planned yet, and just pull the whole website down, and install a new frame from scratch, so I could implement the new extensions.

The con? The website is down, hopefully it will be down only til late afternoon today. Honestly the length of how long it will be down depends only on how much the muscles on my back are acting up on me having to sit for so long in front of the computer.

So, before explaining what the new website will be like, let me briefly touch on the "why no Clay with me" this coming Sunday.

As I have briefly explained before, I am in chronic pain. Severe chronic pain. The pain does not have just one cause, it's a combination of several life-long side effects of the breast cancer treatment I went through 8 years ago. I am not going to go to much in depth on this, suffice to say that the breast reconstruction I had (with a plastic surgeon that hadn't performed this surgery on a former athlete before and didn't think ahead of time of the long-term consequences it would bring) involved removing the Latissimus Dorsi muscles from my back, tunneling them under the arm and bringing them to the front. The problem is, being a former gymnast and swimmer, that muscle was very developed and had a major influence in holding my torso upright. The remaining muscles on my back cannot compensate, so if I sit on stand for more than 15-20 minutes at a time without changing position, my back muscles "catch on fire".  After a "clay with me" session of 1 - 1 1/2 hours, I need several hours of laying down to recover. Normally on Sunday afternoons, that is my weekly "time off" that I spend laying on the couch watching movies. Trust me, I am not trying to put any guilt out there and I love doing the "Clay with me" lives, the problem is that if I do it, I will have practically half of the day wasted and not be able to work on the website because I'd have to recover. And THAT is a priority right now.

That is also the reason that I went back on doing most of the tutorials with subtitles instead of voice-overs. Because with the subtitles I can take breaks, while when I do voice-overs I have to sit and record the whole thing in one shot.

Now, I hope you will understand - and I promise, I will do an extra "Clay with me" live once I'm done with the website.

Now, about the new look and functionality of the website.

I went for the latest version of the platform. That means, that it is optimized for viewing from all types of devices, and it will be very mobile friendly. The layout is more visually appealing and hopefully will make things easier to find.

The sponsorship will be now streamlined. There will be no more need for you to first purchase the sponsorship through the paypal button on the website, then me to first add you to the facebook secret group and then manually activate your account on the website and set your access permissions.
Instead, there will be a streamlined subscription with several types of subscription plans, reminders, discounts, and all that. The sponsors will have free access to the paid tutorials through coupons applicable at checkout and because the system is personalized, they will be able to see exactly all their membership rewards used or not used, perks and all that. The system will automatically release their rewards after so many days of subscriptions.

Not only that, but if you choose to create an account when checking out when purchasing a tutorial, you will be able to see exactly your history. The new system also allows you to purchase "bundles" that offer a discount if you purchase more than one tutorial.

There will be a "message board" type where you can leave your questions or comments. Actually there will be two, one public and one members-only.

And that brings me to the other new feature: anyone will be now able to open an account on the website and have access to free content that is not available to non-members.

The access to my Amazon Influencer Store will be easier to find due to the new layout.

Also, the new layout will allow me to be able to make cameos of artists that I admire and support, or pieces of news, or new products I am testing.

I HOPE to be able to do a monthly newsletter, but I am not promising that, as I don't know if I will be able to do it, time-wise and health-wise.

So considering this, I hope you can understand how horribly busy I am right now trying to get everything up and functional, and why I can't possibly do a live broadcast on Sunday. I will still do the monthly chat on Saturday, as that does not imply me sitting up tense and I can lean back on my chair while talking to you. So if you have any questions, have them ready!

Book review - Polymer, the Chameleon Clay by Victoria Hughes

Polymer - The Chameleon Clay: ArtRanch Techniques for Re-creating the Look of Ivory, Jade, Turquoise, and Other Natural Materials

The absolute pioneer in imitative techniques, Victoria Hughes' book remains the ABC for all polymer clay artists. The techniques described in the book actually look better now than they looked over 15 years ago because of the changes in formulas in the various brands of polymer clay - the faux amber will look more translucent, the faux agate absolutely stunning, and the faux jade impossible to distinguish from real jade unless touched and weighed.

The first part of the book is a treasure of tips, tricks and advice - taking you from the very beginning, tools needed, how to condition your clay, to the finesse details of finishing and putting together your pieces. The second part has imitative techniques and a project for each of them. As a bonus, the book has many examples of artwork belonging not only to Victoria Hughes but to other artists as well.

Imitative techniques described in the book:

- Turquoise nugget beads
- Lapis-lazuli - still remains the basic technique for imitating this semi-precious gemstone - the only variances I've seen in present day tutorials are just mildly tweaking the color recipes used
- Coral - absolutely perfect
- Amber - try it with the Cernit translucent or Pardo translucent for stunningly realistic faux stones.
- Ivory - the project for this technique is beautiful
- Agate - still one of the best methods out there, I have seen many tutorials that are inspired from it but very few get to her mastery
- Metals and Faience - gorgeous projects

The book ends with another series of projects for an intermediate level of mastery. All gorgeous.
A must have.

The book can be find used for a very affordable price.

Sorry no tutorials til tomorrow at least

That is, on youtube. I might start posting some of the canes for the "patchwork" tutorial video soon on here.

I did not take a day off tutorials, haha. Just a short break from the youtube ones. Hey, I did take two days off before! Right? Right?

I did fight again fatigue these last two days. Sunday I fell asleep right after the live broadcast. I had put off eating until then because I was afraid I would fall asleep, and sure enough, I did. I slept (with small interruptions) until next morning. During the small interruptions I desperately tried to stay awake but it didn't work.

But then Monday morning I did feel a little bit more rested, and was able to finish editing and post the tutorial for my sponsors. Ugh. I know. All artists make an "intro" video about those so people can see what they miss and they can become sponsors too. I will. I promise. I don't promise when because it seems with this fatigue I can't keep timed promises anymore.

Then yesterday afternoon (until I narcolepsied again) and this morning I did work on some of my pieces. I'm behind in that too. Starting to see some head way. Trying to get all the pieces that need resined ready - was hoping to do it today, but apparently it will have to wait til tomorrow. Finally got the UV resin so this shouldn't take long. Sunny days here so even without an UV lamp I shouldn't have any issues.

I think I need to make a page with everything that I should be doing and try to check off what I managed to do. That way you'll figure out how behind I am.

Anyway. Friday my blood work came back all wonky. Not all tests results came back as of yet, so Monday they told me "let's not panic just yet". My oncologist has been contacted too so I guess between him and my primary care doctor they're on top of things.

Oh well. Back to more joyous things. Look at these creatures. Look at them. Aren't they the most adorable thing?

Lost day but trying to be productive

I told you that this week will not be very productive due to 3 doctor visits. Today is the last one.

Yesterday I was able to work on stuff for only about 1 1/2 hours. Because I had to mow the lawn - managed to do only the front - as the grass was getting over a foot high. With all the rains we've been having, had to find a day that did not have any rain and the grass would be at least not soaking wet.

Took me from around 8 am til 1 pm/ And then of course I promptly fell asleep around 4 pm. Woke up at 9 then hobbled around the house and catnapped here and there til close to 4 am. As a result I feel like a zombie.

I should be leaving for the doctor any time now - med transportation coming to pick me up. And guess what? It's raining again.

At least last night, because i wasn't able to do much else (hand was hurting too) I spent most of the time between narcoleptic fits trying to find as many polymer clay color mixes as I could on pinterest. Created a big board all with color mixes then started creating boards for just one color. Managed to do the green and the red.

No idea how I will feel when I'll be back from the doctor. Will update later.

But yea, you might want to check my pinterest.

Love this camera! Some photos

So finally my new camera is here. And it has great macro, everything I have wanted. So I've been just going around taking pics. Here's some things I was not able to show you properly before.

Example of the type of layered varnish using the "piano finish" technique I've been talking about. This is the bracelet of a set in mokume gane/mica shit that I still have to put together (as in mount the pendant and put findings on the ear rings)

Extruder string circles  bib necklace

I will be honest with you. I got the shape of these beauties when I was absentmindedly twisting some scrap clay and at one point I started paying attention, I said "omg" then started to actually manipulate the clay

The pretty tiled bracelet with the "vitrail" cane applique

The pretty tiled bracelet with the "vitrail" cane applique

These earrings I need to get on the findings. Pardo translucent with the flowers cut of that cane I used on the "spiral ear rings" tutorial. Resined.

I love how this color combination looks in the mokume gane Made a few pairs of earrings

The problem is, not sure which way to hang them

A better look at the piece made during the live event this pas

and the back of it

stone "wavy" bracelet I'm still sanding and stuff

same

another necklace I need to put together sigh

bracelet made with one of my faux raku techniques (yes I invented it. It can happen you know)

Polyform lies

Not a good Monday. I hate it when people p*ss on you and tell you it's raining. I've been mentioning the lack of mica in Peacock Pearl, and others have noticed it too, there were quite a few message exchanges on this subject. I wrote to Polyform here on facebook and they directed me to send photos to their customer service. I did so, and actually made a mica shift on a piece of Peacock Pearl and showed it compared to a mica shift on Magenta Pearl. I got the answer today. It says

"Hello.
Thank you for contacting Polyform. The Peacock Pearl has just enough mica pearlescent to achieve the peacock pearl color and the shimmery pearl effect on the surface."

Are you kidding me?

I have to confess that I sent back a not very nice reply. It irks me to no end when people treat you like you were stupid and they could lie to you and you'd believe them.

I wrote:
"Do me a favor and don't treat me like I just came down on a raft from the Amazonian jungle.
I've been working with polymer clay since the late 80s, and have used Peacock pearl since it came out on the market. That is NOT the way it used to be. Besides, I am not the only one who has noticed this, there are at least 2 dozen more artists and it has been a discussion going on for a couple of weeks now, the same as it was when you had those batches of stretchy white Premo in the big packs. If you are trying to make economies on the cost of production and decided to use less mica in this specific color, say so. But don't give me (us) lies because you may lose credibility and there ARE other brands out there that we can buy. I will make sure to mention the answer I got to all the people who subscribe to my youtube channel, on my facebook page and in the groups I am a member of.
I wish you luck in your future endeavors."

I think that as soon as the weather gets a little cooler, I might switch to other brand of polymer clay. As much as I like Premo, I do not like to fill the pockets of a company that shamelessly lies to their consumers.

If you've noticed the same thing happening with your Peacock Pearl, and you want to write to them about this, the general email is info@polyformproducts.com and the person who replied to me's email is KRush@polyformproducts.com, she's apparently the "Director of R&D and Regulatory Polyform Products Co. Inc."

Canes, finished pieces and low temp enamels

I'm putting here a few short notes - I'm waiting for the medical transportation company to pick me up for my appointment with the spine specialist so I will post something more elaborate later today. I just wanted to give you a few heads up where I am right now.

I only need to finish editing the tutorial on the pieces made with the Stroppel cane. The unfortunate events of yesterday with the delays uploading the tutorial on the cane itself made my work on that be delayed as well.

I got the cane caps from tinypandora (thank you, Elizabeth!) and she sent me a bracelet kit too (I love you, Teresa!). So depending how worn out I will be after the doctors visit (and if they give me any spine shots or not) I will be working on a translucent cane tutorial either this afternoon or you'll see it tomorrow. And next week I'll do a bracelet one too with the kit.

Finally all got finalized with the low temp enamel manufacturer. I do have to re-shoot a few things on the review and testing, and I will also take the opportunity that Ludmila Bakulina has posted a video on how to make enameled-metal-looking-like poppies, I will try and see if this enamel works on doing those, so you know if you want to make the poppies, where to get the enamel, here in the US. I hope to have that up Sunday.

So, teaser for the pendants made with Stroppel cane until the tutorial gets uploaded

Today - the Stroppel canes

So today's tutorial is about the Stroppel canes. I think it's scheduled to be published at 8 am CDT
Then for tomorrow morning will be how to make two pretty pieces with these canes. Two pendants. Actually one turned in a kind of a necklace but oh well. I might even change the other one into a necklace, who knows what new ideas I get if I look at that pendant for 4 minutes haha

Anyway, I woke up close to 2 am and couldn't go back to sleep. I woke up due to noisy storm.
No this time there was no danger just lots and lots and lots of thunder. And of course Seamus got scared and I had to go and pick him up and hold him

I'm finally getting back to being sleepy,so I think I will try to sleep at least a couple more hours. I will update this later or do another post.

Until the tutorial gets published, here, feast your eyes. I think these canes came up gorgeous, and the small square one with black wrapping looks like a sur-realistic painting in miniature. I should put it up for doll house miniaturists to make decos for dollhouses out of it.

Update 7:30 pm

So lost internet connection while I was sleeping in the morning. So the video, even after it was fully downloaded got stuck in processing. So I went ahead and re-uploaded it. Now my voice got stripped from the second part of the video.

So I am uploading it for the third time.

I'm telling you, if I need to spend a month re-uploading this video over and over, I will do it. I start suspecting youtube throttling me because I got over 2k subscribers now and I'm not monetizing my channel (aka not playing any of those pesky ads that annoy everybody, and there are no ads on my video pages either).

Today's tutorial - Kalyana effect explained

So it still has about 1 hour to upload. For tomorrow, it's already uploaded and scheduled the Stroppel cane tutorial - actually both Stroppel canes with variants.
After which for Friday (I'm not done yet with it) will be two pieces made with each of the Stroppel canes (one of them with a variant)

The cane caps from TinyPandora.com are supposed to be delivered Friday, so I will do Friday afternoon the translucent "floating" Tsunami cane and a piece with it.  That will be uploaded for Saturday.

After which I will be taking a few days break - of course we will have the live event on Sunday at 2 pm CDT - but I need to catch up with stuff.

If I get the ok from the enamel manufacturer, I will upload the testing and review video too.

In the mean time, for next week:

I just got in the mail the Sculpey clear (yay!) and a few colors and samples from a not so known mica powder and glitters company. These pigments are fairly general use and the company does a lot of business in body painting, but I am sure that they will work wonders on clay - they already told me they have one other polymer clay artist who is using them. And the colors! OMG the colors they have! You will see.

Until then they sent me 2 glitter samples, one very fine and delicate and pink with iridescence, and the other one is a dream in blue - the glitter is of various sizes, but the blue is absolutely fabulous.
Pardon the quality of the photos, the new camera is not supposed to get here until the 18 so I'm still stuck with taking photos with my crappy phone.

Feast your eyes!

Enamel testing

Finally the video is uploaded, waiting for the response from the manufacturer. I did extensive testing on this low temp enamel. I am thrilled. It is an enamel and it acts like one. A few things to consider when using it (hey, it's an enamel not a chalk pastel or an acrylic paint) but wonderful results can be achieved. Once I'm done with what I have to finish I will make a piece that will be a real piece not to be tested.

Also finally managed to upload the tutorial for my sponsors.

Taped half of the tutorial for tomorrow.

I got the printer in the afternoon but didn't even get around to unpack it. I didn't get to eat until 4 pm. Honestly I was a little bit wary about eating as I didn't want to get sleepy (which, now, I am. sigh) but I think I did accomplish a lot.My back muscles are BURNING though. I really need to drop everything and lay down.

Here's for you, some of the testing pieces. Yes they don't look that neat, because what I was interested in was the way it applies, how it reacts, colors, etc, not prettyness. I love it. There are two pieces of scrap clay that I tried to see the applying metallic waxes and acrylic how that goes, how cleaning of metallic waxes and acrylics from the enamel goes, etc etc etc. Enough said, you'll see a pretty piece soon. Until then, this is how it looks like. Finally. A REAL ENAMEL that works on polymer clay. That we can buy here in the US!!!

Some beautiful art finds

First of all thank you all for being there for the live event, it was a hoot! I just wish the chat was sound, I wouldn't have so many problems keeping up. It is so heart warming for me to see more and more people coming to be with me, it already feels like a meeting of friends.

Now, on this post, I just wanted to share with you a few of my discoveries I made while searching to make sure that what I intend to present wasn't already presented by someone else.

Now, you probably know more of these beautiful blogs than I do, considering the long break from art I took, but hey! you know what? Think that right now I'm like a child discovering the world. I've been a hermit for quite a few years and lived in pain and sadness, now I'm out and can only marvel at the beauties I discover. So please enjoy with me.

This French artist - she has some of the most beautiful mokume gane works I've seen. Also, the blog is 11 years of work worth. Plenty to feast your eye on beauty. And lots to learn from.

Another artist with beautiful work and she knows Jeff Dever!!! Personally!!!! OMG! Sorry but he is rapidly climbing towards the status of God of all delicate and wondrous things made out of Polymer Clay in my world lol

Also, someone definitely inspired themselves from polymer clay art when they created the print for this dress.

Pretty isn't it? I would love to get clothes with prints from my works! You know my spiral jelly roll mokyme gane technique, wouldn't that one be absolutely fab?

Look at the 3D effect on this! I've been mulling over something like this.

Ok done for now. I'm tired and I think I need to lay down a bit.

OMG! Polymer clay color mixing app

OMG OMG OMG look what I found!

An app that retrieves the color from your photos and then builds up what colors of clay you have to mix in order to obtain those colors.

And not only that, but it also gives you recommendations on color combinations based on the color theory!

Dang this makes my whole tutorial on color theory redundant, now, doesn't it?

It's not free but it's quite cheap too. I would have to see what color recommendations it gives and if it's a valid app though. Maybe next month.

You can get the app here

Of copycats, outright thieves, copyright and legal stuff..

I guess I am finally ready to write this post. Especially in view of the latest "happenings" - it seems that even Christi Friesen has been the subject of being copied shamelessly. I will not name any names in this article.

I will not hide the fact that I am very opinionated about this, because 1. in the past I lost money due to people with no ethics who paid for my lessons (they were in another field, not related to polymer clay or even art) then once they had them they went ahead and presented them as their own work and distributed them first for purchase then freely; and 2. I actually had a friend (not BFF, just friend) who worked for close to a decade to develop a specific art technique that she presented to a small circle before fully launching it to the world. The next day, one of the people who were present at the presentation went ahead and launched it as being their own. The original artist committed suicide that evening. It doesn't matter if you think it was over reacting, that it wasn't an issue to die over, the fact is that the artist was so hurt to see her work of almost a decade stolen away so shamelessly, that before everybody else who had been present at the small presentation could come out and call out the thief and do any kind of damage control, she felt that it life was not worth living anymore and killed herself. It happened a little over 20 years ago, not in the US, but please, take this as food for thought.

Let me first start by explaining the whole concept of tutorials vs work in progress (WIP) vs artwork presentation. It should be a no-brainer that, while works in progress and artwork should obviously never be copied, tutorials are out there to teach people, and people are supposed to copy what is in the tutorial in order to learn how to do it. That is why us artists do the tutorials. So you can learn from it. So you can do what we do.

But it's one thing to practice a technique presented in a tutorial and another to present that technique as being yours. Why is it done? To be very honest, my raw and blunt opinion is that the people who do it are not artists. They cannot come up with anything interesting of their own so they have to steal in order to make their work interesting. Also, people who do it have a specific psychological profile that has as main characteristic a low self esteem and self-image issues. But that's just my opinion and it's derived from my knowledge and former academic education in psychology. There is also the issue of the monetary gain - after all, youtube channels are monetized, and the more people you attract to your channel, the more ads, and the more money you make. So yes, there are layers and layers in the motivation behind these acts.

There is, of course, the fact that we live in a world that now has a very large population. And it is very possible that more than one person comes up with the same idea independently from each other (I hope that makes sense). But when someone habitually "discovers something new" within a month of someone else (and usually it's the same "someone else") presenting it, that is no coincidence.

The fact is, everybody suffers from this behavior. The original artist may lose money, is faced with a lot of stress, does not get the recognition they deserve, it severely affects them emotionally. The ultimate consumer not only is mislead (and most of them are not educated enough to know what is going on) but also starts learning that it's ok to behave unethically, it's ok to steal.

It is also very true that the growth of the internet has the unfortunate effect of blurring, for some people, the lines between what is and not permitted. Not only permitted but between what is and not legal. To be very honest, I keep being flabbergasted over the way some peoples' minds work. For them it's alright to take something that doesn't belong to you. To give you an example, I was at one point, recently, in a forum where the discussion was exactly about this, someone purchasing a tutorial then presenting publicly and freely the technique taught in that tutorial. Everybody was all over them and calling them out, and then this solitary voice chimes in "well thank you for doing that, I hate how artists make you pay for that, we should all just share freely". I asked her if it was ok to go in your neighbor's house and steal their TV because you liked it and you thought you should be able to watch your movies on a best quality TV. She said "oh no, that is different". Well, it's not different at all.

Unfortunately, the whole growth of the internet and the social networking did effect in the most unfortunate way many aspects of our society. Ethics (or to be more precise the lack of it) is one of the most affected of all.

On this note, and to show you how blurred these lines are in the average internet user's mind, I will give you an example of my own experience. A few years ago, I posted a few photos of some of my watercolor works. One of them was of the Celtic goddess Morrigan with her two ravens. Right away someone piped up with "oh I love those ravens, I will show this to my tattoo artist and I'll have a tattoo done with them". I immediately pulled down the photos and told her that her tattoo artist can contact me and I'll be happy to make a design for them; for a price. She accused me of being a greedy bitch, and stated that artists should just give away stuff because "it's just art". Yes. Well that taught me the lesson of never posting again any of my works on the internet without a watermark across the whole photo.

I always try not only to reference artists that inspire me, but actually try to educate my viewers a little about all kinds of art history and facts. Not only that, but to give you an example, I know how to do beautiful Monarch butterfly canes. But I also know several artists that have paid tutorials on how to do a Monarch butterfly cane. I might at one point make a paid tutorial about it, but I will never post a free tutorial about it. Even if I'm sure that the way they do it is most likely different than mine, it would make them lose money if I would be to post a free tutorial about it. And if at any time any of my tutorials would actually present something that is in another artists "paid" portfolio that I'm not aware of, once I am aware of that, I will pull down my own free tutorial. It may happen - see what I wrote above about different people coming up with the same thing independently - and it is possible to not even be aware of it, as the internet is so big, but as I said before, it's one thing when it just happens and another thing when it's a habit.

Now take a minute and think about this. And think also, how it would affect you if you knew that the tutorial you are watching (or reading) was stolen from someone else. Would that affect you in any way, or you wouldn't care? Would that affect the opinion you have of the artists who made the tutorial, or would it not, and you're just happy that you learned something new, for free?

I will stop here, and will give you a few links to read what others think and wrote about this.

First it's a wonderful explanatory article from the Blue Bottle Tree

Then another wonderfully written expose on this subject written by Harriete Estel Berman

And how artists feel when they are subject to being copied, on the Jewelry Making Journal.

On this subject, what happens on EBay.

Another great article on Polymer Clay Daily.

I think this is enough, you can find many references and opinions by doing a simple Google search.
I hope I gave you a little food for thought. And more understanding.

And I'll see you all in a little bit, on my live "wrapping up July and what happens in August" live event.

For Sunday August 6 "Clay with me Sunday" live event, please have ready: - 1/4 pack metallic clay of your choice - 1/8 each of 2 colors of your choice. Try to combine the colors for a good effect. Suggested combinations: 1. metallic gold (all except "antique gold" of Premo) or copper or bronze with your choice of (just the first color in list with / sign + second color): turquoise blue/robin's egg/burgundy/jungle green + white; or jungle green/seaglass/sage green + light lavender (get it by mixing 2 or 3 parts of white with 1 part purple) or light pink (recommended 2 parts white + 1 part Souffle "so 80's" or just 1/8 part red +2 parts white). 2. Silver with purple (or Souffle turnip) + either wasabi/pistacchio 1:1 with white or a very light blue (turquoise 1 part to 2 parts white); 3. Graphite pearl with either red + 1:1 mix yellow and white, or purple + lavender (see above) We will make earrings. All that is needed is 1 rigid blade and 1 flexible blade, as tools. See you all Sunday!

Photos - unboxing - more pieces - stupid printer

1. After another unsuccessful couple of hours of fighting with my printer I gave up. I did manage to get it connected to the network but it refuses to print. I searched all the HP support forums and even called. Apparently this is a known issue. Which sometimes gets resolved by turning the printer off for a week and then it might suddenly start printing.
You don't say?
So here's to wasting $17.99 on a new black ink cartridge.

I went ahead and searched online and found a deal at bestbuy, bought a new printer that was on sale for half price for only $22 shipping included. Here goes my oil change for this month. But I need the printer.

Unfortunately it won't be here until Tuesday so I will have to go to the post office. I will go tomorrow though. It's week-end shopping with my best friend and she drives, we can stop first at the post office and that way I don't have to drive myself and be in pain while I'm waiting in line.

So. That got solved. Not the best way (as in printer should have worked and my packages should have been on their way already) but nothing I can do better right now.

2. I am watching two used/refurbished digital cameras on ebay. If I manage to snatch one, it would be wonderful. There are a few tutorials I could make in photo format, both for here on the blog and on the sponsors/patrons group. It would make things way much easier than having to do a video tutorial. Less time consuming and better views on the process, making it better to understand.

Getting ready to tape the tutorials I'm doing today. The one for the real enamels. And the ones for the sponsors. If I got time in the in-between, I might make the itty-bitty caterpillar with a top hat. haha.

3. I've posted the necessary for Sunday's live event. Will make a separate post here.

I'll probably make a post later, besides that one. with some teaser photos ^^

4. I'm hungry. But I don't want to eat so I wouldn't fall asleep lol

Update 1:30 pm

1. I ate. I'm sleepy. Bummer
2. I won one of my bids, so I got a digital camera so I'll be able to post photo, pdf and slideshow tutorials! yay!

Some good some bad. - Sutton slice tomorrow

So yes I've been VERY productive today, and even managed to not fall asleep at all. Well the fact that last evening I narcolepsied around 7, woke up around 1:30 am and got so @#$$ed about it that went ahead and drugged myself with Benadryl so bad that I slept til 7 am this morning might have something to do with it, haha.

So. I did one tutorial (public) for today. Even did one for tomorrow! And it's uploaded and scheduled for publishing at 5 am CDT!!! How good am I? Huh? Huh?

So it's on the Sutton Slice, with a bonus of making a tube/cords bracelet. This is the bracelet.

But wait! That is not all!

I managed to tape bits and pieces for my sponsors/patrons tutorials too, on making super pearlescents and making ... well... sorry that's a secret. I will make a presentation video soon. Yay I'm making commercials about myself! Wait. I hate commercials. What a conundrum.

It's 8:30 and I finally feel that I need to wind down. I'm good for tomorrow. Saturday will be no tutorial, will be my live event. Sunday maybe a small one but there's the regular live event too - yes I will post soon what is needed for it.

And because I had nothing else to do, I started doing some research for a "history of polymer clay techniques". Of course. I got nothing else to do. Why do I always get distracted like this?

I still didn't write the post about copiers and thiefs. I will. Soon. I promise.

Also, I still didn't fix the printer. I need an Ethernet cable. I am afraid I threw away all the ones I had, a few years ago (a few good years ago) after I got housewide wifi. So I'll have to run to Walmart or something and get one.

Translucent canes part 1 - chrisanthemum cane

This is just a short post to tell you about today's tutorial. It's the first one of my series for August on translucent canes. I touched the subject briefly in a couple of tutorials in the past couple of weeks, and used some translucent canes, and promised to talk more about this subject, so here it is.
